USA industry standards legally require 1/20th, or 5% pure gold by weight when producing gold filled. Rather than having a dipped layer of gold, gold filled is made with gold alloy that is pressure bonded onto a base metal in multiple layers. This results in gold filled being the closest resemblance to real gold and can last years if not decades when cared for properly.
